Girls Varsity Volleyball Coach Reydan “Tita” Ahuna recently was inducted to the Hawai‘i Sports Hall of Fame, which recognizes outstanding athletes who serve as leaders and role models.
While attending the University of Hawai‘i (UH), Ahuna was captain of the 1987 NCAA volleyball championship team, which defeated Stanford for the NCAA Division I title. She also is the only person in Hawai‘i volleyball history to win State high school and national collegiate titles as both a player and coach. Her most meaningful award, which reveals the passion she has for student-athletes, is UH’s Jack
Bonham Award, which she received in 1988. Considered the most prestigious athletics honor at UH, the award is given annually to the top male and female senior student-athlete who exemplifies athletic excellence, academic achievement, public service, leadership and character.
Ahuna started her coaching career as the head coach of Kamehameha Schools’ Boys Varsity Volleyball team, which she led to two State championships in four years. She then served as head coach and senior women’s administrator at Hawai‘i Pacific University, leading the team to two NCAA National
Championships, a NCAA Pacific Region Championship and four Pacific West Conference championships.
