More than 100 curious Academy students mingled with 85 alumni healthcare professionals in the Cooke Library Learning Commons on Oct. 3 at the second annual Punahou Alumni Healthcare Spotlight.

Dr. Francis Duhaylongsod ’78, recipient of the PAA Samuel Chapman Armstrong Humanitarian Award in 2017, addressed the attentive crowd, explaining how many years are required to become a physician, estimating salaries for different specialties and offering alternatives to medical school.

Alumni then divided into breakout groups by profession. There were 11 groups, including dentistry, pediatrics, surgery and nursing.

Students were encouraged to select their first breakout group based on curiosity to learn about something new. Alumni were generous and patient with their answers. They explained how they had decided on their specialty, and they spoke openly about the satisfaction and sacrifices that came with working in healthcare.

The event created opportunities for future connections. Many of the professionals who attended extended invitations for students to shadow them at their offices and encouraged students to reach out to them in the future.
