An Entrepreneurial Challenge with MIT Launch

Punahou partnered with MIT Launch to host 150 high-school students for the MIT Launch Clubs Blastoff event on Sept. 16.

Punahou partnered with MIT Launch to host 150 high-school students for the MIT Launch Clubs Blastoff event on Sept. 16.

MIT Launch provides materials and mentorship support to high schools all over the world to help students develop entrepreneurial skills and an entrepreneurial mindset. Blastoff is the official kick-off for the school year, and in addition to the main event at Punahou, 2,800 students from schools around the world participated virtually via social media.

The core activity of the event was a five-hour “inventathon.” Students were challenged to work in teams and develop product prototypes around the theme of environmental sustainability. Assisting the students was a group of mentors composed of Punahou alumni, parents and entrepreneurs associated with MIT. Mentors helped with product development and refining the students’ marketing pitches for their products.

Students produced prototypes of products that ranged from a phone battery powered by fidget spinners to a vertical farming system targeted for urban areas. At the end of the inventathon, each team gave a one-minute pitch to a panel of judges comprised of local entrepreneurs.
