A day before their virtual Commencement in late May, members of the Class of 2020 received their diplomas from President Mike Latham ’86, during a well-choreographed, socially distanced event on campus. Although untraditional, the students savored the opportunity to take part in the event, wearing formal Commencement attire accompanied by their parents. The graduates arrived in decorated cars at scheduled times, and lined up for their turn to be handed their diploma and “elbow bumped” by Latham. Although Punahou faculty were restricted from attending, they joined in via Webex and cheered for students on a nearby screen. It may have been a different kind of graduation celebration, but there were lots of smiles and warm moments, as the Class of 2020 and their families displayed grace and good spirits.
