Oahuan, An Award-Winning Yearbook

2023

The 2023 Oahuan yearbook has earned a First Class rating with a Mark of Distinction in Design from the National Scholastic Press Association. Judge Stephen Kennedy lauded the book for its cohesive and organic design, strong writing and relevant coverage of the unique Punahou experience.

“This is a superb yearbook. The design is really top-notch,” wrote Kennedy. “You seem to have a unique school experience at Punahou School, and this book does a wonderful job of celebrating the people, classes and activities which forge your ‘ohana.”

Returning editors who contributed to the achievement were also acknowledged, and the accolade serves as inspiration for the new editorial team working on the 2024 Oahuan.

Additionally, the 2023 Oahuan won a First Place award in the American Scholastic Press Association’s annual yearbook competition. “Your yearbook shows a growing knowledge in the fields of writing, photography and page design and contains elements/sections of a memorable yearbook that will be treasured for years to come,” wrote the judge.

2021

Congratulations to the 2021 Oahuan yearbook staff. The Academy’s Oahuan earned three major awards and the students were recognized for their incredible efforts, especially during the challenges of the pandemic.

“Every year it is a climb to Mount Everest, and it is certainly an accomplishment,” said Alex Selarque, Oahuan yearbook advisor and visual arts teacher.

The Oahuan was awarded a Gold Medalist Award from Columbia Scholastic Press Association at Columbia University; first place for the 2021 Scholastic Yearbook Award by the American Scholastic Press Association with a distinction for outstanding use of color; and a First Class Award with a mark of distinction for coverage from the National Scholastic Press Association at the University of Minnesota.

A judge from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association had this to say to the students for their efforts:This year provided unique challenges and your staff rose to meet them. While you experienced delays, canceled events and more, it never compromised your content. I am impressed by what you are able to accomplish without the time allotted for a class.”
