On Oct. 4, Punahou Best Buddies hosted Leadership Training Day, welcoming Best Buddies Hawai‘i and chapters from across the island for a day of friendship, inclusion and leadership. Punahou club members helped lead activities, welcome guests and share the mission of inclusion throughout the day.
As a Promoter Chapter, Punahou Best Buddies focuses on spreading awareness and education about individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Because Punahou does not have a special education program, the chapter’s role differs from DOE schools, where buddies are matched on campus and can spend time together during lunch and activities. Instead, Punahou’s chapter builds inclusion through community events such as Ambassador Trainings, Holiday Parties and the annual Friendship Walk.
The club is moderated by Sarah Man (Grade 6 Social Studies), Julie Dinius (Grade 7 Social Studies) and Josh Hayashi (Junior School Chaplain), who together help guide students in meaningful leadership and service. Man shared why this program is especially meaningful to her. “Inclusion means everything to me. Having a daughter with autism has shown me the power of compassion, respect, friendship and understanding. Best Buddies reminds us that at Punahou and beyond, everyone deserves to feel seen, valued and included.”
Students are equally inspired by the program. Sixth grader Austin Churchill ’32 joined to support someone close to him and says, “I am in Best Buddies because my cousin has autism. I want to learn as much as I can to be the best possible cousin and to educate my family and others about people with disabilities. They should not be treated any differently and they have the same hopes and dreams as we do.”
This year, an impressive 91 Case Middle School students have joined the club – reflecting Punahou’s growing commitment to leadership, service and inclusion.
Punahou Best Buddies continues to make a positive impact by building understanding, connection and compassion – living out the Best Buddies mission of friendship and inclusion for all.
