Second Grade Market Day

Open for business! A few classes of second graders held an in-person and online Market Day last Friday, as the finale to their semester’s lessons in economics, which included interdependence, scarcity, resources and entrepreneurship. Students designed items based on a need they saw in their community and their own lives. Students then made a prototype of their product, sought feedback from their classmates, and produced 25 items to sell for “dragonfly dollars,” many made from recycled materials. They also advertised their items through commercials and flyers and also had to “purchase” a business license to set up shop. The second graders were excited for classmates and school administrators, including President Mike Latham ’68, to visit them on Market Day, and for parents to participate online.
