AI in Education: Stanford’s Dr. Victor Lee Visits Punahou for Parent Talk

Parents and guardians of Punahou students gathered at Thurston Memorial Chapel on Oct. 29 for an evening of insight and discussion on the role of artificial intelligence in K – 12 education. The event, “Team Up! AI in Education,” featured Dr. Victor Lee, Associate Professor at Stanford University and faculty lead for the AI + Education initiative, alongside Punahou President Dr. Michael Latham and several Punahou faculty.

Dr. Latham opened the event by emphasizing that AI should amplify learning, not replace it. He urged parents to support a thoughtful, balanced approach – one that preserves critical thinking, creativity and human connection. “Teaching must remain human-centered,” he said, highlighting that classroom discussions, presentations and dialogue are now more valuable than ever. He also reaffirmed Punahou’s continued focus on digital literacy and student wellness.

Dr. Lee shared research and national trends showing that teachers are currently heavier users of AI than students, with 40 – 60% experimenting with the tools in their work. He noted that rates of academic integrity issues have not increased since the arrival of AI – they simply have evolved in nature. Across the country, schools are also shifting from repetitive skill drills – such as memorizing vocabulary lists or completing routine math exercises – to deeper learning, using AI to inspire creativity, spark debate and help students bring ideas to life.

Several Punahou faculty shared how AI is already being used in classrooms. Marisa Proctor (Academy English) described students using AI as a “thought partner” in writing, while Liz Castillo (K – 8 Design, Technology and Engineering) showcased creative projects like Wilds of Wonder, where fifth graders design robotic mythical creatures. Nozomi Ozaki (Grades 6 – 8 Design, Technology and Engineering) outlined the Aloha+ Challenge project, connecting AI, design and Hawai‘i’s sustainability goals. Eddie Kinnear (Academy Design, Technology and Engineering Department Head) shared how students use AI in engineering, from CAD modeling to electric vehicle prototypes.

In closing, guest speaker Dr. Lee encouraged parents to model curiosity and openness. “Kids are watching how adults use AI,” he said. “Engage with them and show that learning is a process.” Both he and Dr. Latham reminded families that the journey of learning – not just the outcome – is what truly matters.
