Ninth and tenth grade Geometry students wrapped up the semester with a hands-on design challenge that brought math to life across the Academy Quad. Individually, students created geometric designs using compass-and-straightedge constructions – such as parallel and perpendicular lines and angle bisectors – while incorporating rotational or reflectional symmetry. They were then placed into groups and given one hour to select a design and recreate it at a larger scale on the sidewalk.
Students were assessed individually on their mathematical designs and collectively on collaboration and critical thinking, with an emphasis on flexibility, problem-solving and working through obstacles as a team. Using different colors of chalk, the groups transformed the sidewalks into a vibrant display of rainbow-hued geometric patterns. The project provided a creative and engaging way to celebrate a semester of learning – and made for a striking visual moment on campus.
