First Responders Inspire Students

The Chaplains and the Luke Center for Public Service launched the 2026 Spirit and Service Speaker Series by highlighting the work of first responders, honoring those who dedicate their lives to serving the community behind the scenes.

During January chapels, students across grade levels learned about the vital role firefighters play in protecting lives and property. Punahou alumnus Mikey Cote ’05 visited chapels for kindergarten through fifth grade, sharing stories from his career as a firefighter and explaining why he chose a life of service.

At the K – 1 chapel on Jan. 12, Cote spoke about his daily responsibilities and reflected on a formative experience during his high school years at Punahou, when he helped rescue people from a capsized boat. He shared that the experience showed him the power of making a difference, something that continues to motivate him in his work today.

The chapel also featured student-led songs and reflections. First grade teacher Meleana Wolf ’05, Cote’s classmate, joined him on stage and put on his firefighter uniform, giving students a closer look at the gear he uses on the job. The chapel concluded with the community singing “We Are One Heart.”

Other members of the Honolulu Fire Department also participated in January chapels. Brett Mau spoke with students in grades 6 and 8, Sean Kamai visited seventh grade chapels and Joseph Lapinad addressed students in grades 9 – 12. Lapinad also shared his connection to Punahou as the parent of a current senior.

In February, the series continued with a focus on law enforcement. Punahou alumni Makana Kaaloa-Torres ’21 and Nick Hirata ’10 from the Honolulu Police Department spoke with Academy students during their chapels, sharing their experiences and reflecting on careers rooted in service to the community.
