An exceptional all-around natural athlete, Dave won a remarkable total of eleven letters in football, basketball and baseball while at Punahou. Testifying to his ability is the fact he won All-Star honors in football (2 years – quarterback), basketball (3 years – guard) and baseball (3 years – shortstop). In his senior year he captained the baseball team and was named to the 1948 All-Territory Basketball Team.This article appears as originally published in the Summer 1981 issue of the Punahou Bulletin.
Continuing his award-winning ways at Stanford, he won varsity letters in football (3 years), basketball (1 year) and baseball (1 year). He received Pacific Coast Honorable Mention in 1951 and 1952 as Stanford’s outstanding quarterback and played in the 1952 Rose Bowl Game.
Shortly after joining Punahou’s faculty in 1956 Dave took over the reins as JV football coach (1956 – 1958) and then became varsity football coach, a position he held for 13 years, 1959 – 1962 and 1968 – 1976. Turning out ILH championship squad in 1959, 1961, 1970 and 1971, Dave was Punahou’s “winningest” football coach with a record of 105 wins, 38 losses and three ties. During this period he found time also to coach JV basketball.
In 1976 Dave resigned as head football coach. He teaches science and for the past several years, has been coaching intermediate basketball. Never one to say “no” where youth athletics are concerned. Dave is also a state official of the Babe Ruth Baseball League.
