Punahou Theatre brought fresh energy to a beloved classic with last week’s production of “The Lion King Jr.”, reimagining the African savanna as a vibrant concrete jungle inspired by Director Vanessa Manuel-Mazzullo’s childhood in New York City. Alive with hip-hop rhythms, street-style choreography and playful city-life imagery, this modern retelling blended timeless themes with a setting that felt meaningful to today’s students.

Featuring a talented cast of 35 middle school performers and a newly added choir of 49 student vocalists led by faculty members Alicia Scanlan and John Roberts, the production celebrated collaboration at every level. Alongside Manuel-Mazzullo, Assistant Director Heather Taylor and Choreographer Nahale Brash played key roles in shaping the show’s vision, bringing together urban movement and expressive storytelling with thoughtful clarity.

The cast delivered heartfelt, dynamic performances as Simba, Zazu and the Pride Lands came to life through colorful visuals, iconic songs and a strong sense of community. Projections, lighting and set elements designed by Andrew Doan and Erin Yu, along with contemporary streetwear-inspired costumes by Athena Espania ’96 Keehu and Anna Foster, transported audiences into a cityscape buzzing with energy and excitement.

Themes of identity, family and courage echoed throughout the production, offering audiences of all ages a familiar story with a bold new pulse. Through innovative staging and the talents of our young performers and creative team, “The Lion King Jr.” became a celebration of imagination, resilience and the journey toward finding one’s place in the world.
