Punahou’s 76-acre campus is a place for learning and discovery, from creating art to exploring nature through Punahou’s Outdoor Education program and more.
Third Graders Explore the Lo‘i
Third graders recently participated in a fun outdoor activity centered around Hawaiian culture and history, part of their studies leading up to the annual third grade lū‘au. During the activity, students learned about advancing to the next “guardian” level in Punahou’s Outdoor Education program. They explored the origins of kalo and were introduced to taking care of the lo‘i (taro patch). The students practiced kilo (observing) the lo‘i and took part in weeding, discussing their continued responsibility in maintaining it. They then played games that incorporated the new knowledge they’d gained. Photos by Kathleen Connelly
