Fostering a Sense of Belonging

Teachers participated in a productive Professional Development Day on Feb. 7, organized by the Center for Teaching and Learning (formerly Professional Programs). The day’s focus was on the theme of belonging, led by Allison Briscoe-Smith ’94, a clinical psychologist, educator and author with expertise in racialized trauma.

Belonging is one of the key elements of Diversity, Equality, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB), and relates to a person’s internal sense of connection to a community, organization or institution. To support students’ feelings of belonging at Punahou, teachers discussed practices to promote inclusion, such as increasing opportunities for participation.
