Here’s a look at esports (electronic sports) at Punahou, which is recognized as a sport by the Hawaii High School Athletics Association.
Punahou faculty member Douglas Kiang, who serves as the School’s esports coach, said there are three games that students are playing this season – League of Legends, Rocket League or SMITE. Although esports isn’t a physical sport, it requires mental acuity, focus, teamwork, collaboration and other skills that students can use in other areas of their lives.
“To see the fact that game playing has a place in learning, that’s pretty innovative and that’s very new,” Kiang says.
