Seventh Graders Help Restore Maunalua Bay

Last week, Punahou’s seventh graders traveled to Maunalua Bay (Kuliʻouʻou Beach Park) as part of the Outdoor Education Kahiau Day Camp series, continuing their K – 12 progression of learning in and about Hawai‘i’s natural environments.

In partnership with Mālama Maunalua, students helped remove invasive limu (algae) from about 1,600 square meters of nearshore habitat. The collected limu was weighed and transported to a nearby farm for reuse. Their efforts supported ongoing work to restore healthy native seagrass, limu and ko‘a (coral) throughout the bay.

After completing their conservation activities, students spent the afternoon enjoying the park’s calm waters and open spaces. The experience deepened their connection to place and highlighted the importance of caring for Hawai‘i’s unique ecosystems.
