PFA Monthly Gathering – An Evening with Dr. Latham

By Mae Lynne Swoboda P’27, ’29, PFA President-Elect

The March Monthly Gathering was a special evening event with Dr. Latham that offered an intimate opportunity for parents and students to learn more about the school’s priorities and future direction.

During his opening remarks, Dr. Latham reiterated his commitment to developing the whole student. Students build critical thinking, communication and writing skills in various grades and subjects while also developing their soft skills to manage stress and discover their passion and talents. “It’s not enough to educate students academically. We want them to be resilient and capable as well,” Latham said.

Personally, I enjoyed hearing about the work being done to keep the curriculum current as technology continues to advance. As students continue to refine their skills on how and when to use AI, faculty and staff are given the opportunity to be AI Innovators. These faculty members look for ways to incorporate technology and share their projects with colleagues, helping to increase the entire faculty’s  knowledge base.

Lastly, Dr Latham’s comment “If they don’t feel like they belong, they won’t grow” continues to swirl in my head. Dr. Latham wants students to feel like they belong. Similarly, I want parents to feel like they belong to the Punahou Community.
