Summer Travel: Bhutan

The Himalayan Buddhist kingdom was the exciting destination for a group of 24 Punahou seniors and faculty chaperones this summer. Through cultural sharing and environmental preservation, students learned what makes Bhutan one of the happiest countries in the world. The trip, which took place from June 25 – July 17, was an international version of Senior Capstone, a course which emphasizes culture, the environment and community service. This trip was really amazing because it taught me to live outside my comfort zone.

Whether it was hiking Tiger’s Nest, living with bugs, eating different foods or not having clean water, it really taught me that I don’t need material things to make me happy.

I also realized how much of my culture in Hawai‘i I take for granted.
