Punahou’s network is an interconnected tapestry that brings together students, alumni, faculty, dedicated family members, coaches and mentors. Each plays an integral role in fostering growth and making meaningful contributions that empower community members to reach for their aspirations.
In this close-knit hui, support is always within reach – whether it’s a practical recommendation for a trusted dentist, a career-changing introduction to a dream company or a compassionate connection offering spiritual solace in times of grief.
This edition of the Punahou Bulletin highlights the many ways we uplift one another. Take, for example, the inspiring journey of Henry Engel ’14 and his sister Sephra ’11, who are making waves in New York City by launching not one, but three L&L franchise restaurants. Their entrepreneurial success wasn’t just a stroke of luck – it was the result of relentless dedication, creativity and the unwavering support of the Buff ’n Blue network, from early-stage mentorship to the celebratory orders of delicious plate lunches at their grand opening.
We also explore the story of Damon Haimoff ’85, who reflects on the profound impact of his former mentor, Hank Fordham. Fordham’s encouragement left an indelible mark, motivating Haimoff to pay it forward and empower the next generation of professionals. This article showcases how Haimoff has supported young alumni – offering sound advice and hands-on experience to help them gain confidence and direction in their careers.
A strong, connected community is built on the foundation of shared experiences that create lasting memories – like the Third Grade Lū‘au, the fifth-grade trip to Hawai‘i Island, and the countless group projects, sports, and volunteer efforts that bring students together.
The Class of 2027 has its sights set on establishing a new tradition with the launch of Spotlight Sessions – TED Talk-inspired presentations where students take the stage during assemblies to share personal stories and positive messages. This initiative has quickly gained momentum through powerful speeches, such as Kyndra Leong ’27’s heartfelt reflection on the loss of her beloved grandmother and Class President Kenton Chan ’27’s inspiring message on the importance of staying true to oneself.
We also share the compelling stories of two alumni groups – medical professionals and recent graduates – who return to campus to mentor current students. No matter the industry or location, one thing remains constant: Puns always support Puns. We hope this issue leaves you feeling similarly inspired and connected.
