Virtual Flaming ‘P’ Shines Bright

As in years past, the Punahou community came together Friday evening to show their school spirit at Flaming “P,” which this year was presented virtually. For more than five decades, Flaming “P” has been an annual event to celebrate athletics and bring together students, families and others in the School community. Although the pandemic prohibited an in-person gathering this fall, many of the traditions came to life online.

The show included a montage of past athletic and Flaming “P” events, a welcome by President Mike Latham ’86, an update of the recent return to campus and a showcase of submissions to the PFA Buff ’n Blue Spirit Photo Contest. There also were lively performances by the Dance Team, Marching Band and Punahou cheerleaders, along with a rendition of “Boom Chicka Boom” by elementary students and Chaplain Lauren Medeiros. A group of student athletes from the Class of ’21 lit the “P,” and the evening ended with “O’ahu a” and cheerleaders leading the “Strawberry Shortcake” finale.

Although there were no spectators for this year’s Flaming “P,” many families who purchased a “spirit pack” still enjoyed Punahou chili and caramel cuts while watching the show.
