Nearly 2,000 alumni and friends of Punahou gathered Wednesday evening for Buff ’n Blue Forever, which celebrated the School and bid a fond aloha to President Jim Scott ’70, who is retiring after a 25-year tenure.
Attendees – many clad in their best buff ’n blue attire – enjoyed an evening of musical entertainment by alumni, dishes from noteworthy chefs and a special program that paid tribute to Scott and his legacy.
“You have provided the perfect example of how to give back to our community,” recent graduate and Class President Lorraine Sim ’19 said in a heartfelt speech to Scott. “We love people who live by principles beyond their own self-interests. We love people who inspire us to be more through their examples. Dr. Scott, we love you.”
After speeches from Principals Emily McCarren and Paris Priore-Kim ’76, Scott addressed the crowd: “I want to thank everyone who made it out here this evening. It means a lot to me… I’ve had the privilege to give a Punahou diploma to nearly 11,000 graduates, approximately one-third of Punahou alumni. And those graduates are our legacy as they pay the gift forward.”
As part of the program, Scott shared news that the School has surpassed its $175 million fundraising goal for the Ku‘u Punahou Campaign, which supports financial aid, teacher development, various educational programs and the creation of inspiring new learning environments. Punahou Trustees, cheerleaders and the Oahu College Band led the audience in a cheer and toast to the accomplishment.
Festivities continued after the event as Grammy-nominated Punahou alumnus Henry Kapono Ka’aihue ’67 played a benefit concert in Dillingham Hall to honor Scott’s years as president. Proceeds from the concert will support the James Kapae‘alii Scott ’70 Grades 2 – 3 Playground. As a result of collective donations, the fundraising goal for the playground has been met.
