“In 2017, your Punahou chaplains took a trip to Atlanta, Georgia, for a conference. We were fortunate to participate in an event at the King Center for Nonviolent Social Change and walked the hallowed grounds of the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was pastor. We offered silent prayers around the reflecting pool and gravesite of Dr. King and Mrs. Coretta Scott King, remembering Dr. King’s messages of hope, peace, justice and universal love. In our hearts were the words of two scriptures that Dr. King loved; the first from the book of Amos: ‘Let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an everflowing stream’ (Amos 5:24), and the second from the book of Micah, fitting guidance to live a life of service, as Dr. King did: ‘What does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.’ (Micah 6:8).
As our Punahou community reflects on the life, dreams and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the dawn of 2021, let us find new ways to, as Dr. King put it, build the ‘beloved community’ acknowledging that indeed, we are ‘tied in a single garment of destiny, we are caught up in an inescapable network of mutuality.'”
