Distance Learning: Kitchen Classroom

To learn about ocean science in her AP Environmental Science class, Sophia ’22 looked around her kitchen for inspiration. Her goal was to demonstrate how ocean currents work, where different conditions, such as temperature and density, cause ocean water to mix or not mix. She successfully revealed this natural phenomena using green tea and almond milk. “It took me so many tries and experiments to get this. I’m happy it worked this well,” Sophia said.

Step 1: Sophia places a cup of hot green upside-down on top of a cup of chilled almond milk.
Step 2: She slowly removes the plastic bag that divides the two liquids.
Step 3: Success! Due to differences in temperature and density, the liquids don’t mix.
