Environmentalism Shines at Sustainability Fair

Punahou celebrated environmental stewardship with its Sustainability Fair on Thursday. The annual school-wide event inspires sustainable living and learning among faculty, staff and students. Stretching across the PE Pavilion and the Chapel courtyard, the student-organized fair showcased projects from across campus, highlighted local organizations, and featured green practices and crafts that anyone can adopt.

In the spirit of an on-campus field trip, students visited the interactive fair on their own or with a class. Student leaders from classes and clubs, such as GSD Engineering, Japanese 4 and Farming Friends, hosted interactive exhibits, crafts and games for all ages.

The Punahou Cafeteria spotlighted recipes made with local ingredients, while the Theatre Department touched on themes of resource scarcity featured in Punahou’s upcoming musical production of “Urinetown.” Presentations from notable community groups also contributed the fair, including Aloha Harvest, Hawaii Nature Center, Hawaiian Electric Company and Mānoa Heritage Center.

A “Fair Passport” engaged students with thoughtful questions and a fun Bingo game, designed for students to reflect on their experiences. Ahead of Earth Day on April 22, the fair proved to be a day filled with education and fun, in celebration of sustainability.
