Each year, the Punahou Alumni Association recognizes individuals who are dedicated to improving the lives of others through service and contribution to the communities of Punahou, Hawai‘i and beyond. Their achievements are an inspiration to the Punahou community.
Old School Award
This award is given to individuals who exemplify the spirit of Punahou through outstanding service to the school.
It is a truly dedicated alumnus who will pick a vacation destination and then check the alumni directory for fellow classmates and alumni in that area. Larry Langley ’68 does this, and over the years has connected many individuals and groups to share aloha and talk story about their experiences at Punahou. Some alumni whom he has brought together didn’t realize there were other Punahou alumni in the area.
As a longtime Punahou Bulletin class correspondent and Punahou Alumni Association volunteer, Langley is a connector. He pulls together classmates to volunteer at Carnival malasada and Hawaiian Plate booths. For his 50th Reunion this year, Langley helped find lost classmates and update contact information. His class notes reflect all who have been found and come to visit.
In the early ’80s, Langley served on the PAA board as a member and as president. In late 1982, Langley was at a party when he struck up a conversation with Dr. Lewis Williamson, who mentioned he was considering razing a home in Kāhala in order to rebuild. Instead, Langley convinced Williamson to donate the old home to Punahou. A few months later, the home was moved, in two pieces, from Kāhala to the top of Rocky Hill, where thousands of alumni have since enjoyed it, now the Alumni House, for class meetings, pau hana and other events.
Langley was also the founding member of the Punahou Alumni Association Northwest chapter and remains an active volunteer. His Portland home is open, and he and his wife host many alumni events.
