Virtual Summer School Underway

Check out this whimsical flight simulation called, “When Pigs Fly,” featuring a ride on a hot air balloon pig! The simulation was created by Yui, a 10th grade student in the Virtual Reality summer school class. In the class, Academy and Junior School students have been learning how to create immersive art, sound, code, stories and interactions. #PunahouSummer

John K. Tsui, the former president of First Hawaiian Bank, noted financier and chair of the Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation, spoke with the Financial Literacy class on Tuesday as part of the Clarence T.C. Ching PUEO Program at Punahou School. Equating financial literacy with a “roadmap for life,” he offered practical advice for increasing personal net worth and insights into investing. “My most important advice is to learn to live within your net income,” Tsui began. How do you increase your net worth? First, your ability to learn, anything you learn increases your demand in the work place; knowledge is irreplaceable. And do your work to the best of your ability. Second: save, save, save and invest, invest, invest, and Tsui followed with advice about how to do both. A wave of student questions concluded the afternoon. #PunahouSummer

Seniors of the Capstone Science class met with Dr. Bill Haning ’67 (top right) to learn about psychology and the science of addiction. Haning is the president-elect of the American Society of Addiction Medicine, representing 6,000 physicians, clinicians and professionals in the field of addiction medicine nationwide. #PunahouSummer #PunahouAlumni

Mahalo to Dr. Robert Malkin for meeting with the seniors of the Capstone Medical course. Even though students aren’t able to travel this year, they are still partnering with Malkin, the founder of the service-learning program associated with @DukeUniversity, @GPSAHealth, to learn about global health and health care services around the world. #PunahouSummer

Though Punahou’s annual Student Global Leadership Institute (SGLI) for international youth leaders isn’t happening officially this year, students from across the globe are still convening virtually to discuss important topics related to current events. #PunahouAlumni are also leading sharing sessions, like this one with SGLI organizer Allen Murabayashi '90, who recently spoke with students in Japan.

In the Honors Chemistry class, Academy students learned about the basic counting unit used in chemistry known as the mole, then applied this knowledge to everyday household items. Students are equipped with home lab kits complete with scales, thermometers, pipets, safety glasses and more, put together by faculty ahead of summer school. #PunahouSummer

On Fridays in the Academy, English students have been sharing their original poetry, short stories and essays virtually with a community of upwards of 125 supportive faculty, staff and fellow students. “We have held the Summer LitFest Fridays in the Cooke Learning Commons – this will be the third year – and we are simply continuing the celebration online!” says Wendi Kamiya. #PunahouSummer

While seniors in the summer Capstone Senegal class are no longer able to travel due to the coronavirus pandemic, that hasn't stopped them from engaging and collaborating with Senegalese students virtually, says Academy faculty Taylor Hamilton ’09. Each week students share thoughts on sustainability and social themes, answering questions such as “What is something about my culture/identity that I don't want to lose?" and "Why is having affordable housing so important?" #PunahouSummer
