Friendship Concert performance at Gakushuin University in Tokyo

When Music Takes Flight

Forty students from the Punahou Symphony Orchestra embarked on an exceptional musical journey throughout Japan. One of the highlights from this memorable trip was the Friendship Concert performance at Gakushuin University in Tokyo, where Punahou students played side by side with students of the Gakushuin Youth Philharmonic to create an inspiring symphony orchestra. The joint performance was a testament to the power of music to inspire intercultural connections.

“Being a musician and a member of an ensemble comes with a host of skills outside of performance and technical skills,” says violist Albert Ko ’26. “It’s also about being able to communicate and collaborate well, and I think this opportunity was the perfect chance to do more of this.”

In addition, the Symphony performed in Osaka at Shitennoji Elementary and at Takawashi Gakuen, an orphanage, where Punahou students participated in both musical and cultural exchanges. Students also gathered to share their talents with the Punahou Alumni community at the Punahou Pā‘ina at the Tokyo American Club.

There was also time for exploration beyond the stage, with students visiting Nara, Kobe, Mt. Fuji, Osaka Castle – as well as the vibrant streets of Osaka and Tokyo. They gained a deeper appreciation for Japanese culture, history and cuisine. Ultimately, the journey deepened their global perspective through the power of music – one of the many lasting impacts of this remarkable trip.
