Students in the Clarence T.C. Ching PUEO (Partnerships in Unlimited Educational Opportunities) Program concluded their summer session with the annual PUEO Ceremony on July 17 at Thurston Memorial Chapel. The celebration featured performances by every grade level, highlighting the knowledge, creativity and connections students developed throughout the summer.
Founded in 2005, PUEO is a partnership between Punahou School and the Hawaiʻi State Department of Education that supports scholars with unlimited potential and limited economic resources through a continuum of academic enrichment, cultural learning and year-round experiences. Supported by the Clarence T.C Ching Foundation, the program helps prepare students to become college-ready while fostering leadership, confidence and resilience.
At the ceremony, each grade level took the stage with a presentation reflecting on the summer program. Presentations included songs accompanied by ukulele, original compositions, skits and student-produced videos. Ninth graders also shared their experience on Kamaola, Punahou’s double-hulled sailing canoe, where they explored Hawaiian voyaging traditions and culture. Together, the presentations showcased the diverse experiences and growth of students.
The ceremony concluded with the senior class performing “Stand by Me,” marking their final summer in the PUEO program. Following the performance, students gathered just outside Thurston Memorial Chapel, where the younger scholars formed PUEO’s traditional tunnel of hands. Lining both sides of the walkway with outstretched arms, they cheered as the graduating seniors passed through one final time. The tradition serves as a meaningful sendoff, reflecting the strong sense of ʻohana and lasting bonds fostered throughout the PUEO program.
