Punahou athletes are back practicing, training and competing, following a reorganized ILH schedule that divided sports into two seasons. While adhering to pandemic protocols, team workouts have been taking place in the School’s Athletic Performance and Fitness Center, and practices and scrimmages have been underway on the fields, inside Hemmeter Fieldhouse and at the Waterhouse Pool.
In Season One, the ILH allowed students to compete in air riflery, cheerleading, cross country, swimming and diving and JV tennis. Varsity soccer and basketball were not permitted to compete, but held practices and scrimmages.
For Season Two, the ILH is allowing competition for baseball, golf, precision air riflery, sailing, softball, varsity tennis, track and field and volleyball. Punahou’s varsity athletes in football, judo, kayaking and water polo are continuing to take part in on-campus conditioning and skills practices. “We’re continuing to explore ways for all of our athletes to enjoy competition this season,” said Academy Assistant Principal James Kakos, who oversees the School’s Athletics program. “Our staff, coaches and parents have been working tirelessly as a team to provide our student-athletes with as many opportunities as possible to safely practice, condition and compete.”
