In the past twenty years at Punahou, there probably has never been a person who was as athletically gifted or as versatile as “Charley.” The following achievements speak for themselves. Football: the first athlete ever to win First Team All-Star selection by both the Honolulu Advertiser and Honolulu Star-Bulletin for three consecutive years. Total offensive leader, junior year, and total offense, passing and scoring leader and Player of the Year in his senior year. Basketball: Unanimous First Team All-Star in both his junior and senior years. Baseball: Second Team All-Star in both junior and senior years. This article appears as originally published in the Summer 1980 issue of the Punahou Bulletin.
Enrolling at Michigan State, “Charley” immediately became the starting quarterback of the Frosh team. During his outstanding varsity career he played quarterback (’67), defensive back (’68), starting flanker back (’69), in the East-West Shrine Game (’68) and in the Hula Bowl (’69).
A severe illness has curtailed “Charley’s” activities and as this Bulletin goes to press our prayers are with him for a speedy and complete recovery.
