On April 14, 2025 – which would have been his 108th birthday – Punahou School hosted a moving ceremony to honor one of its most distinguished alumni, Capt. Francis B. Wai, Class of 1935. The event marked the presentation of a replacement Medal of Honor medallion to the Wai family, commemorating Capt. Wai’s extraordinary heroism during World War II.

Killed in action on Oct. 20, 1944, during the Battle of Leyte in the Philippines, Capt. Wai led a daring assault under heavy fire, rallying disoriented troops and clearing a path forward. Though not obligated to lead, he stepped up without hesitation – an act that saved countless lives and left an enduring legacy. The Medal of Honor is the highest military award for valor in action.

“Captain Wai had no responsibility to lead the charge,” shared Brent K. Wilson, grandnephew-in-law of Capt. Wai, during the ceremony “But he did, with complete courage and conviction.”

The original Medal of Honor was presented on June 21, 2000 by President Bill Clinton, and is displayed at the Smithsonian. In this ceremony, Lt. Gen. Joel Vowell of U.S. Army Pacific presented a replacement medal to the Wai family in front of an audience that included Governor Josh Green, Maj. Gen. Steve Logan ’81, and other dignitaries.

“This is more than a medal,” said Dr. Mike Latham ’86, Punahou School President. “It’s a powerful reminder of what it means to serve beyond oneself – something we hope all our students carry forward.”

Marly Wilson, Capt. Wai’s grandniece, reflected on the moment: “Ethnicity has no bearing on a soldier’s effectiveness. His sacrifice – and his story – deserve to be shared widely.”

Capt. Wai’s legacy of courage, character and selfless leadership continues to inspire the Punahou community. Through this tribute, the School reaffirms its commitment to shaping future leaders who rise to challenges, serve others and lead with honor.
