In late February, students and teachers of the Oahuan team embarked on the biennial visit to the yearbook’s printing facility in Altona, south of Winnipeg, Canada, to ensure the yearbook is ready for print and unveiling in late May.
The focus of the visit was a rigorous full-day press check at Friesens Yearbook, involving meticulous color proofing and approval by Oahuan Editor in Chief Edward Zhang ’25 and Art Director Hailey Oh ’25. The two students were accompanied on the Wo Center-organized trip by Academy Art faculty members Alex Selarque, who is the Oahuan yearbook advisor, and Angela Swadling.
Amid their busy schedule, the group found inspiration at the Friesens library, exploring a vast collection of yearbooks, and met with the company’s senior admin. A highlight of their visit was the discovery of the 2018 Oahuan’s win of the 2019 Printing Industries of America’s Premier Print Award of Recognition.
Their trip wasn’t all work; the team enjoyed some fun in the snow, an outing to a Winnipeg Jets ice hockey game, courtesy of Friesens, and sampling of the local food favorite, poutine. The team looks forward to the yearbook’s release, with anticipation building for the unveiling of the cover design.
