Middle Schoolers Mix It Up in Learn to DJ

Students in Punahou Summer Programs are learning what it takes to keep a crowd moving in the Learn to DJ course for grades 6 – 8.

Throughout the summer, students explore the history and culture of DJing while developing hands-on skills using professional equipment, including vinyl turntables, digital media players and DJ controllers. They learn how to mix songs, match beats, transition between tracks and build playlists that create an engaging musical experience for different audiences.

In addition to learning technical skills, students experiment with a variety of music genres, gaining a deeper understanding of rhythm, melody and song selection. They also learn how to set up a basic sound system, giving them the confidence to create and perform their own DJ sets.

The course will culminate with each student producing a short mix that showcases the techniques and creativity they developed throughout the session.

Offered exclusively through Punahou Summer Programs, Learn to DJ gives middle school students the opportunity to explore music technology, creative expression and performance in a fun, hands-on summer environment.
