Punahou’s Case Middle School students took the stage for their production of “Once on This Island Jr.” on Oct. 23 and 24, bringing a vibrant story of love, courage and hope to life through music, dance and storytelling.
Set in 1950s Haiti, the musical follows Ti Moune, a young peasant girl who falls in love with Daniel, a wealthy boy from the other side of the island. Guided by the island’s gods, Ti Moune embarks on a journey that explores themes of love, prejudice and the strength of the human spirit.
Directed by Heather Taylor ’92, with musical direction by Alicia Scanlan and choreography by Nahale Brash, the production featured a talented cast of 42 student performers supported by a student technical crew of 18.
The production came to life through lively choreography, dynamic musical performances, and striking visuals. Projections, lighting, and set pieces were designed by Andrew Doan and Erin Yu, with sets constructed by the Academy Fall Tech Theatre Class and vibrant costumes by Athena Espania ’96 Keehu and Anna Foster.
