From script to screen, students in Punahou Summer Programs’ Roll Camera! An Introduction to Movie Making explore every stage of the filmmaking process while creating their own original short films.
Designed for students in grades 6 – 8, the hands-on course introduces the fundamentals of storytelling, filmmaking and video production. Throughout the summer, students develop story ideas, write scripts, perform on camera, and learn how to frame and shoot scenes while working both independently and in collaborative production teams.
Using iMovie and Adobe Premiere, students transform their footage into polished short films, experimenting with editing techniques, pacing, sound and visual storytelling. Weekly creative challenges encourage them to think outside the box by making movies within unique constraints, strengthening their problem-solving skills while inspiring new ideas.
By the end of the 5-week session, students gain experience in every step of the filmmaking process – from developing a creative vision to producing and editing a finished project – making this summer-only course an opportunity to explore the art of storytelling through film.
