In a Word

By Gina Gelber

The heart of the Punahou Network beats through the bonds that students forged through magical moments of dreaming, discovery and intellectual growth. These relationships don’t fade with the passing of time – they continuously evolve and solidify – thanks in large part to the efforts of the Punahou Alumni Association (PAA).

One of the key ways these connections endure is through the Alumni Notes. Think of them as the glue that keeps the Punahou family bound together.

In March, we reached out to a curated group of alumni, comprised primarily of Class Notes Correspondents and asked them a poignant question: Distill into one word how you feel to be part of the Punahou network?

Friendship, ‘ohana, gratitude and kuleana are some of the sentiments that were expressed. These responses reflect the depth of the connections within the community: and are a testament to the tireless efforts that go into keeping these relationships alive.

The Class Notes keep us informed about the milestones in our community; professional achievements, marriages, the joy of new births, personal challenges like illnesses, and even the sorrow of deaths.

Organizing this valuable resource is no small feat, and for the past seven years, Alumni Notes Editor Waileia Davis ’86 Roster has been the devoted steward behind it all.

To give you a sense of the scale, the current Bulletin features Alumni Notes from 81 classes, with 146 Class Correspondents and often more than 100 images that capture the essence of the buff and blue camaraderie. Our dedicated correspondents, some of whom have been contributing for decades, span the globe to ensure that the bonds between alumni remain strong, bridging generations and borders alike.

“The best part about my job is witnessing the Punahou alumni experiences over the span of 81 Classes, every quarter. Histories, adventures, friends, loves, and losses are shared through images and memories,” Roster says. “Witnessing a cycle of life through the buff ’n blue viewfinder is pretty amazing.”
