The recital features ten student string quartets performing works by Beethoven, Boccherini, Stamitz, Hensel, Hisaishi, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Grieg and Brahms.
The Punahou Chamber Music Program was established to provide opportunities for students to explore, study and develop an appreciation of chamber music. There are unique musical demands and skills needed to play in a small ensemble. In a chamber music setting, the students play one to a part, must read and understand the score, as well as actively communicate with and cue their fellow quartet or quintet members. The students develop collaborative and leadership skills as well as personal responsibility and confidence, all of which are necessary in defining a composite group sound and a compelling musical interpretation. We believe that these skills are essential life skills and will continue to benefit these students in all future endeavors.
