Kai Gammarino ’28 Crowned Hawaiʻi Poetry Out Loud Champion

At Punahou School, the power of poetry took center stage as sophomore Kai Gammarino ’28 earned top honors at the school’s 2026 Poetry Out Loud competition – and went on to claim the title of Hawaiʻi State Champion.

Gammarino first distinguished himself on campus with confident, expressive recitations that showcased both depth and emotional range. Advancing to the state finals at Tenney Theatre, he delivered three compelling performances: Ambrose Bierce’s “The Statesmen,” Kahlil Gibran’s “On Children,” and Willa Cather’s “Evening Song.” His dynamic presence and thoughtful interpretation earned him the title of the 2026 Hawaiʻi Poetry Out Loud Champion.

Reflecting on his journey, Kai shared that poetry is “the ultimate diary – a way for us to document the human experience.” He also carried with him a bit of Mark Twain wisdom throughout the competition: “All you need in this life is ignorance and confidence, and then success is sure.”

With his state victory, Kai received a $200 award and secured $500 in poetry materials for the Mary Kawena Pukui Learning Commons. He will now represent Hawaiʻi at the Poetry Out Loud National Finals in Washington, D.C., April 27 – 29.

Punahou School congratulates Kai for his courage, artistry and dedication – and wishes him the very best as he takes the national stage this spring.
