Alumni and friends of Punahou have reunited across the globe to celebrate President Jim Scott ’70 before he retires in June. Punahou Alumni Association (PAA) regional chapters have hosted six receptions in London, Portland, Seattle, Boston, Washington, D.C. and New York City, with four more events planned in 2019.

The receptions have allowed Scott to meet and catch up with alumni and friends in person, and for the community to thank him for his leadership and vision. Over the last decade, with Scott’s support, PAA has grown to eight regional chapters across the United States and in Asia, serving the approximately 50 percent of alumni who live away from Honolulu. “Jim has been a champion for the regional chapters through his presence at alumni events and his support for the Office of Alumni Relations,” said Jeanette Tom ’93 Kennedy, co-president of PAA Mid-Atlantic. “Jim’s steady presence has helped our chapter stay connected to Punahou and each other.”

Each reception to date has featured a combination of regional flavor and buff ’n blue spirit. In Washington, D.C., PAA Mid-Atlantic members presented Scott with an American flag flown over the U.S. Capitol in his honor, along with a certificate from the Architect of the Capitol. The gift was made possible by U.S. Sen. Mazie Hirono and Nick Luna ’12, who works in Hirono’s office.

In New York, guests enjoyed live Hawaiian music and Hawaiian cuisine by New York-based chef Kevin Chun ’99.

Orchid lei and caramel cuts provided a touch of Hawai‘i and Punahou at all of the events.

Scott’s farewell tour continues in California and Japan this spring, before wrapping up in Honolulu on June 5.

The European Union was the first stop on President Scott’s farewell tour. Dana Haimoff ’87 hosted an intimate gathering of alumni at her London home in June 2018.
Young alumni in the Washington, D.C. area, who were students during Jim Scott’s presidency, gathered to wish him goodbye.
PAA volunteers have helped to plan the receptions in their regions. Here, volunteers from the New England chapter greet President Scott and PAA President Laura Ing ’71 Baker, who was visiting from Honolulu.
